Inolex has announced a preservative ingredient and issued European patent EP3075401B1 for a paraben-free formulation for topical cosmetics, toiletries and pharmaceuticals requiring octylhydroxamic acid and orthodiols. Multifunctional compositions of acid esters, as well as methods of using these compositions to prevent their occurrence. growth of microorganisms.
Inolex’s newest ingredient, Spectrastat CHA (INCI: unavailable), is a 100% natural, powdered, non-palm chelating agent included in the Spectrastat line of preservative products.
The company says organic acids and chelating agents derived from coconut are a sustainable source of octylhydroxamic acid (CHA), which remains effective at neutral pH and prevents the growth of yeast and mold in mixtures.
According to the company, several MCTDs are used in combination with CHA for effective preservatives, including caprylyl glycol, glyceryl caprylate and glyceryl caprylate. This combination of materials and the resulting effective preservation of cosmetics is described in a recently issued Inolex patent and forms the trade name Spectrastat.
Michael J. Fevola, Ph.D., vice president of research and development at Inolex, commented, “Our proprietary compositions and methods create a versatile ingredient platform that provides formulators with options when developing optimal preservation systems for consumer products.”
