Arkema participates in the Global Product Strategy program of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA). This commitment underscores the company’s desire to inform the public about its products in a completely transparent manner. As a signatory to the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) Global Charter for Responsible Care®, Arkema Group also participates in the organization’s Global Product Strategy (GPS) program. The goal of this initiative is to increase public confidence in the chemical industry.
The group demonstrates its commitment by preparing a GPS/safety summary (product safety data sheet). These documents are available to the public on the website (see below) and on the ICCA website.
The purpose of the GPS program is to provide a reasonable amount of information about the hazards and risks of chemical products throughout the world and then make this information available to the public. Thanks to the globalization of the market, this leads to the harmonization of chemical management systems and ensures compliance with national and regional regulations.
Europe has developed structured REACH regulations that require the submission of detailed dossiers for the production, import or sale of chemical products on the European market. GPS programs can reuse this data to create safety reports. Arkema Group undertakes to publish a safety summary within one year of registration of a chemical substance in accordance with REACH.
GPS is one of the results of major international conferences on protecting the planet, held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, Johannesburg in 2002 and New York in 2005. One of the initiatives that emerged from these summits was the adoption in Dubai in 2006 of a policy framework for chemicals management in an international context. The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) aims to promote, coordinate and support efforts to minimize the impact of chemicals on human health and the environment by 2020.
In accordance with the SAICM standard and as part of its product stewardship and responsible care programs, ICCA has launched two initiatives:
The European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) and national associations such as the Union of the Chemical Industry (UIC) and the American Chemistry Council (ACC) have pledged support for the plans.
